About Deer Grove Forest Preserve

Deer Grove Forest Preserve, located primarily in Cook and DuPage counties in Illinois, spans over 1,100 acres of varied landscapes including oak-hickory forests, tallgrass prairies, and wetland areas. The preserve plays an important role in protecting natural ecosystems within the rapidly urbanizing Chicago metropolitan region. Historically, the land was used for farming and grazing before being reverted to natural conditions under the stewardship of the Forest Preserve District of Cook County. Today, Deer Grove serves as a critical refuge for native plant and animal species, including white-tailed deer, red foxes, numerous bird species, and pollinators. Visitors can experience over 7 miles of multi-use trails designed for hiking, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing during the winter months. The preserve includes the historic Fitchie Creek Trail and a restored wetland area that offers excellent birdwatching opportunities. The North Unit and South Unit are accessible by multiple entrances, each with parking and trailheads. A picnic pavilion and informational kiosks provide amenities for day visitors. Deer Grove’s natural diversity and accessible location make it a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts seeking a quick escape to nature within the Chicago area.
